The primary goal in developing Sandstone was to help BC based artists respond in a progressive way to the COVID-19 related shutdown of live in-person performances and touring. At its most basic level, Sandstone represents an immense pivot for its founders, Katherine Penfold and Matt Reid, two hardworking and full time artists in BC’s music industry. Working together on video projects for both Matt’s band, “Mad Riddim” and Katherine’s solo releases through Nettwerk, the two identified early on in the pandemic that artists and arts workers in their communities were faced with an almost insurmountable task: how to say afloat financially, maintain artistic output and simultaneously develop the skill set to effectively learn video production and digital promotion in order to access audiences in a dynamic and engaging way.
After many weeks of discussions and a massive amount of due diligence, Katherine and Matt created Sandstone as a general partnership, undertaking the process of securing a facility, building it themselves into a custom production studio, and developing the initial stages of a robust online arts hub.
